Kharagpu, Telugu speakers of Kharagpur city are worried about their linguistic identity. Although almost all the mother tongues of the country are being neglected due to the lure of English, but the Telugu speaking people of Kharagpur city have expressed solidarity regarding this and have formed an organization called ‘Telugu nathi ekta vedica’. NCS Rao associated with the organization says that nowadays Telugu speaking children do not speak Telugu even at home, even when two Telugu speaking people meet each other, they resort to other languages. Neglect of mother tongue is a matter of concern, hence many Telugu speaking organizations of the city have decided to come together on one platform. On the occasion of Andhra Foundation Day on 1st November, a whole day brainstorming session will be held on 3rd November, Sunday, to solve the problem, in which administrative officers from across the country and stalwarts from other fields will participate in the one-day program organized at Andhra Higher Secondary School.
R Sunder Rao says that Bengali speakers are conscious about their mother tongue but the situation is getting worse here, people are adopting English indiscriminately. He claimed that once two-thirds of the city’s population were Telugu-speaking, which has now reduced to one-third and Telugu-speaking people are forced to migrate.
It is noteworthy that the condition of Telugu speaking schools of the city is also not good, many schools have been closed while many schools have to resort to Hindi or English medium. Many primary schools including Nimpura Upper Primary, Subhash Primary have been closed. Telugu Vidyapeetham and Andhra Higher Secondary School also have to take help of Hindi and English medium students to save their existence. Although Telugu speakers have a prominent role in many major temples of the city, the temples of education are continuously turning into ruins due to which social and cultural decay is being reflected. People say that the Bengal government has given linguistic minority status to Telugu speakers but the position of Telugu speakers has continuously weakened.
K Surendra Reddy, teacher M Kalidas R Kishore and others were present at the press conference held at Andhra Higher Secondary School.
