TREATMENT OF OSTEOPOROSIS : BALLOON KYPHOPLASTY OR VERTEBRAL AUGMENTATION PERFORMED AT SER CENTRAL HOSPITAL GARDEN REACH
The 1st Case of Balloon Kyphoplasty or Vertebral Augmentation for D11 Vertebrae fractures, was performed at the Central Hospital, South Eastern Railway by the Department of Pain Medicine & Anaesthesiology with excellent post-operative outcome in December 2023
Osteoporosis has reached epidemic proportions and is a major public health issue for 200 million people worldwide. According to the 2005 annual report of The National Osteoporosis Foundation, 1 in every 2 women and 1 in every 4 men aged 50 and older suffered from osteoporosis-related fracture.Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) constitute the most frequent complication of osteoporosis. The chances of VCFs increase with age, reaching 40% in women over 80. If it is not treated timely, it may cause severe pain and immobility which will lead to atelectasis and pneumonia, worsening of osteoporosis, and decubitus ulcers.
The benefits of the Balloon Kyphoplasty or Vertebral Augmentation are significantly high rates of success, low incidence of complications or adverse events, brief surgical time and recovery period, limited sedation, and short to no hospital stay. Vertebral augmentation techniques (ie, kyphoplasty) initially create a cavity by an inflatable bone tampin the vertebral body, and then the cavity is filled with the bone cement material. It restores fracture height and reduces kyphosis. And ultimately patients get rid of pain and immobility.
